EUCLID
While little is known about the life of the Greek
mathematician Euclid, his axioms and postulates remain a major influence on
geometry after two millennia. Euclid gave no proof for his assumptions,
believing they were so simple they needed no explanation. He believed that if
some geometric relationships were known, reason or logic could be used to figure
out new relationships.
WHY EUCLID
It was his architectural background that led Ken Cosgrove
to apply Euclid’s teachings to his study of the human figure. Both as a student
and teacher, he discovered that the challenges of drawing the human figure were
simplified when Euclidean concepts were applied. Euclid’s concepts may have
been addressed to mathematicians, but Mr. Cosgrove believes he was also talking
to the artist in all of us.
